Have you ever watched someone push a lime down the neck of a Corona bottle and think, ”Wow, that’s a cool guy thing to do” No? That’s because nobody thinks that. If you have to force a citrus fruit upon a beer, the beer is doomed to begin with.
Apparently, Modelo is the 2nd most imported beer in America. I didn’t look up it’s position in the UK. We can all assume it won’t be in the top 10. So, is it any good?
Modelo describes itself as:
Brewed as a model of what good beer should be, this rich, full-flavored Pilsner-style Lager delivers a crisp, refreshing taste.
That‘s part 1. I agree with everything written above. It’s far better than Sol, which has glucose syrup in it and is not imported (2 no no’s). Better than Corona but not too dissimilar in taste. A lime isn’t needed here however.
Well-balanced taste and light hop character with a crisp, clean finish. Modelo Especial is characterized by an orange blossom honey aroma with a hint of herb. Modelo Especial contains Water, Barley Malt, Non-malted Cereals and Hops.
Here‘s where the wagon falls off. Orange blossom honey aroma. Nobody but a green fingered pillock is going to know what that is. Even then I reckon they’d struggle. It smells of beer. Fizzy, ice cold, lagery beer. That’s what I want it to smell like. Save the orange blossom for the wheat beer. The hint of herb must be beyond the limits of my senses. If you put a gun to my head and told me to slap my Mother, or tell you what herb it is, you best believe Mummy is getting an open palmed crack.
Conclusion: Hot day + Cold Modelo = Happiness. Better beers are out there, but this doesn’t need much brain power to enjoy. It also comes in a strange 355ml bottle size.
